Aww my sweet friend Michelle gave me a Versatile Blogger award!! I have never received a blog award before, so this is all new to me! Thanks Michelle, I appreciate it!

To accept the Versatile Blogger Award the rules are:

1. Thank and link back to who gave you the award.
2. Share 7 things about yourself.
3. Pass it along to 7 blogs you’ve recently discovered and enjoy
4. Leave your recipients a note, telling them about the award.

7 things about myself

1. I like to multi-task, which means I can be found on the couch most nights perusing Facebook on the laptop, watching a TV show or movie, and chatting with Billy or a friend online. At the same time.

2. I love to bake. I like cooking as well, but prefer making sweet treats. I am known for my cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies.

3. I am extremely affectionate, and will hug a person on first meeting. I think it freaks some people out, but it is mostly well received.

4. I like to make lists. Goals, shopping lists, chores, to-do, anything. I also prefer to keep my lists on paper, rather than my phone.

5. I hate cleaning. When I do clean, I am a surface cleaner, and make lots of piles. It’s very irritating and eventually I do a deep clean.

6. I am a control freak. I seem to think I have the best, most rational and logical way to do EVERYTHING. I am learning to accept that other people may have different ways of doing things that are still very good, though not my way.

7. I am currently going through an egg donation cycle, so I can help a couple have a baby. Though I don’t want kids, I am so happy to be helping a couple who have struggled with infertility achieve a dream of their own.

Meatloaf Monday

Every evening Billy or I will take Marlo for her walk. When I take her, I always make note of the strange, exotic, and mouth-watering dinner smells that emanate from all of the homes in our apartment complex. This past weekend, I happened across the most delicious smelling meatloaf. I am not a huge meat fan, and meatloaf isn’t at the top of my list for meals that make me salivate, however, the aromas coming from this apartment were definitely yummy and it made me crave meatloaf of all things! So while many people are taking part in the Meatless Monday campaign and eating their veggies on this cool fall evening, I made turkey meatloaf instead.

I was inspired by this recipe, but was out of eggs and milk, so I improvised and came up with something new. Here is the recipe I used instead. It smelled delicious while it cooked, and now that I am eating it, it totally wins! So glad I made the substitutions that I did 🙂

Adrian’s Italian turkey meatloaf

  • 1lb lean ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup Italian bread crumbs
  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup ketchup (you can also use marinara sauce, but I like ketchup)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl combine turkey, ricotta, and bread crumbs. Mix in salt, pepper, oregano and garlic powder. Add water as needed and combine until sticky. Transfer to a loaf pan and top with shredded mozzarella, then ketchup.  Bake at 400 degrees for 1 hour.

Makes 4 servings

calories: 287, fat: 11.32, carbs: 18.3, fiber: 0.4 and only 7 Weight Watchers points per serving. (I created this recipe on the daily plate and it gave me the nutritional information based on the ingredients I listed, such a helpful tool!)

10 things I learnt this weekend

I’m linking up with Being Brazen to share some thoughts from my weekend!

1. When the hubby’s away, I do not play! In fact, I stay in more, and go to bed earlier. I also eat more. He can never leave again!

2. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a ridiculously weird movie. I don’t see why it has such a cult following.

3. I really need to be cuddled and loved daily, otherwise I get sad. With the hubby away, I ended up cuddling my friend Diane for a moment on Friday night. She was sweet to let me.

4. Doggies can make things better. Marlo was a very good companion this weekend, staying by my feet while I couched it up, and enjoying the walks we went on.

5. Home cooked meals with my best girl friends make Friday nights amazing. As do champagne cocktails.

6. Giving myself multiple belly injections hurts. You think I would get used to it after the first week, but not yet. Only one more week to go!

7. I will really miss my sweet salon coworkers. I have one weekend left at Lux, then I move to Palazzi Salon in November. Gotta do what’s best for the business though!

8. Rainy days are perfect for staying in, bundled up…except when you have to work, then rain just makes things dreary.

9. I do not yet have all the pieces to my Halloween costume, which could pose a problem if I can’t find them by next Friday.

10. Eating multiple desserts is not good for my waistline, however it is a lovely way to pass the time.

Also….it’s that time again for MINGLE MONDAY! Meg is hosting her fabulous blog mixer on Life of Meg again, so stop by, link up, and start mingling! This is one of the best things about Mondays. The bloggers who mingle on Monday’s at Meg’s  have unlimited creativity, inspirational thoughts and lovely things to share with you.

Oh, hi Gorgeous!

I think you are absolutely beautiful. You have a body to die for. You have so many unique and wonderful characteristics. You are perfect.

Now, let’s get real for a minute and recognize a problem in our lives. We women have it tough. We are constantly blasted with images of conceived perfection- super models in their skeletal glory, Victoria’s Secret Angels with their perfect tousled hair and curves for days, celebrities on the cover of tabloids with new noses, boob jobs and tummy tucks or looking like a million bucks because of their trainers and meal delivery services. If you are anything like me, this can bring you down and make you think you are fat, ugly, or need to change everything. In reality, those women work their butts off to look the way they do because they are paid to. Seriously, if you and I were paid the big bucks to look fly all the time, we would do it. I could get to the gym every day to workout with a trainer, and eat my meal service delivery food like a good little starlet if someone was paying me to.

We need to be realistic. Not all of us have the ability to workout 5 hours a day, 7 days a week to look like Katy Perry or Heidi Klum. I for one have a hard enough time fitting in my 3 runs each week, let alone follow it up with a weight session at the gym, and not just because I have a busy schedule, most of the time I. just don’t. want. to.

We also need to be realistic about what is acceptable and healthy for our bodies. Not everyone is meant to have 6 pack abs, or an hour-glass figure. One of the things that I would love to have is something I call square crotch, which is where your inner thighs don’t touch and create a gap. I have very athletic thighs, they have always touched. Even at my thinnest in high school, I didn’t have square crotch, so it’s not realistic for me to pine after them. But I do. We all have a desire to look differently, and sometimes that can cloud how we see ourselves, making us focus on all the negatives, rather than embracing the positive. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to wake up every day and truthfully say you love yourself, even the flaws? It’s deeply embedded in our culture to want perfection, so this is a tough concept to learn and employ.

To refocus my health and fitness mindset, I have made a goal to be strong and healthy, rather than skinny and weak. I know my body carries more muscle, my weight has always reflected that, so I won’t be saying I need to lose 10 pounds to get to a goal weight. Instead, I will continue to run, workout when I can, and eat sensibly, without becoming obsessed. Now, the not becoming obsessed part is probably going to be the hardest for me, since I am a control freak and I like to micromanage everything in my life. Most of all, I want to love myself the way I am now, imperfections included, and take that love into my workouts and my diet. I don’t want to change because I hate what I see, I want to change so I can be strong, run further, and most of all be healthy.

What are your healthy goals?

It is my greatest wish that all women would learn to love themselves the way they are, not with 10 less pounds, or a different nose, or thinner thighs. I hope this motivates you to love yourself and set healthy goals. I also hope you have someone in your life who tells you just how perfect you already are, and how much they love the way you look. If not, Bruno Mars can do it for you with this song …

Also, lots of hugs and many thanks to Meg, of  Life of Meg, for featuring my blog on her Fabulous Must Reads post! It is an honor and super exciting to be featured on a site I just love to visit 🙂 If you are stopping by because of Meg, THANK YOU, and welcome!

Giveaway, Sharks and bad doggy behavior

My lovely friend Michelle is hosting another fantastic giveaway on her blog! She has teamed up with Kate Gabrielle of Flapper Doodle to bring you this giveaway of a 2011 Flapper Doodle calendar. It’s super cute, and well worth a trip to Michelle’s site for more info!

In other news, I went to the San Jose Sharks game tonight, and they lost. I don’t follow sports too often, and when I do it’s usually hockey or MMA, but I don’t like how the Sharks are starting off their season. That unproven new goalie has me worried. Let’s all cross our fingers and send the Sharks some love for their season!

For all you doggy owners out there, I would love some advice on a Marlo issue. She is a little prey driven….like she sees a squirrel out on a walk, she becomes entirely fixated on it, and no manner of “leave it!”s or “no”s will break her concentration. Even off leash in our complex’s dog park didn’t deter her concentration from where she had seen the squirrel disappear. She pulls on her leash trying to get the squirrel. Is there anything I can do to keep her from doing this behavior on walks? I worry that this prey drive will translate to going after our cats once they get comfortable enough to come out of the bedroom and into the living room with her around, whenever that may be. Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated!

Well that’s your random Tuesday update!

I don’t care if Monday’s blue

Wow guys, the weather where I live went from 95 degrees a few days ago to chilly and raining on Sunday! Because of the new doggy, I got to take a walk in the rain yesterday, something I haven’t willingly done in years. Not that I was entirely willing to do it yesterday, but duty (or dooty ha ha) calls.

I usually enjoy the rain…on one condition; I don’t have to do anything in it. I don’t like driving in the rain because everyone becomes grannies or fast and furious drivers. I don’t like being out of the nice, warm and cozy house where I could be cuddled up on the sofa with a blanket and a good book. I especially don’t like to walk in it because it soaks my hair and clothes and chills me to the bone.

But for this face,

I would do pretty much anything. It’s puppy love ❤

I also got to go for an evening walk with the pup and with the hubby! Billy isn’t really all that active. He just got a new bike, so he’s been riding a little bit, but he isn’t the kind of guy who will suggest a brisk stroll around the block, a hike, or pretty much anything with exercise, so it was a treat for me to get to walk hand in gloved hand with my man and our dog. I can see this becoming a tradition whenever possible, I just loved it!

Meg, of Life of Meg, is hosting her fabulous Mingle Monday over on her blog, you should stop by and check it out, maybe find a few new blogs to follow. I have been totally inspired by a few blogs I have found recently through Mingle Monday, so hopefully you get some new reading material that inspires and enlightens you also!

New Additions {Marlo}

Well hello lovelies! First off, I just want to remind you that my Kevin Murphy giveaway is ending this Friday, make sure you enter before that! Check it out here!

I also wanted to share a quick (who am I kidding, nothing is quick with me! I am wordy as all get out!) post with you all about the newest addition to my family, Marlo!

Marlo is a 6-year-old English Bulldog girlie that Billy and I adopted from Santa Cruz Animal Services shelter today. We have been talking about getting an English Bulldog for a while, at least the last year or so. We I have been scouring for months doing English Bulldog searches and have come close to checking out a few here and there, but things just never fell into place.

Last week, I found a listing for an older bulldog in a shelter in Santa Cruz, not far from our home, and became super excited.

I was willing to pay a large adoption fee through one of the local bulldog rescues, so when I saw the shelter had a deal going on that you get “4 paws for 1/2 price” and older dogs would only be $60, I was sold. There is literally no other option for coming by an English Bulldog at that price….not even close. She also fit the health criteria, the looks, the personality, everything. Billy and I called the shelter and waited on hold for over an hour, no joke, I left for work and had Billy wait, and when he was finally connected through, they accidentally hung up on him! I told him it would be easier to just go down there and check her out, meaning we could do it the next morning. He took off in peak traffic time to go check out the bulldog at the shelter, and was told she had been adopted out mere HOURS prior to his arrival. We were absolutely devastated, thinking it was just another one that didn’t have pieces falling into place.

I resumed my bulldog search this past weekend, and lo and behold, the same dog is listed at the SC shelter AGAIN! What’s more, she was listed twice, the second time being at the sister shelter in Watsonville. I had to find out if this was a legit posting or if they had just left the post up after her adoption. I e-mailed the shelter on Sunday night, knowing they weren’t open on Mondays and not expecting to hear back before Tuesday. Monday morning before 7am, I had an answer. Sisi was returned to the shelter because of her rough play with children. I corresponded with the shelter contact throughout the day on Monday, and made plans to head up to Santa Cruz Tuesday morning with Billy. Our luck held out, she was available and they had her on hold for us!!

Before we even met the dog we were given a rundown of Sisi’s history, her behavior, her temperament, health history, etc. and given options for correcting any possible bad behavior. We then got to see this precious girl, and of course we fell in love. We had already fallen for her on with a blurry picture of a snout, so seeing her in person and getting the full personality did us in! We brought her home, did the Petco run for all the supplies, and now we have an adorable and sweet English Bulldog who we have decided to rename Marlo. She is named after the Strikeforce Welterweight women’s champion Marloes Coenen, whom we saw take the belt this past Saturday in person at the San Jose Arena. It was our first live and in person MMA event, so it was pretty special for us. Silly I know, but our cats are both named after fighters too! Hemi Chuck Liddel after the “Iceman”, and Rush after Georges “Rush” St. Pierre. It’s fitting 🙂

I’ll get some better pictures later, just had to share our new love bug!

Kevin Murphy Giveaway!

Hey gang thanks for being such amazing readers! I really appreciate the visitors to this here blog, and because I like to walk the talk, I would love to show my appreciation by giving away some rad products.

Kevin Murphy is an amazing hair dresser from Australia who created a fantastic product line to solve the problems he was running into on photo shoot sets with products that were already on the market. He uses naturally derived and organic ingredients, many native to Australia, to make a sulfate and paraben free line of shampoos, rinses, styling and treatment products.

This past weekend I had the distinct pleasure of meeting the man, the myth, the legend that is Kevin Murphy, take a hair cutting class with him, and even get one-on-one instruction from him. I also got to attend a styling class by his second in command, Felicity Davis, who designs many of his looks for each campaign, and a podcasting class from Janelle Chaplin his European top dog.  While at the show, I scored an awesome travel set of products called a Jet.Pack, and now I know exactly what to do with them…give them to one of my loyal readers!

The Jet.Pack includes travel sizes of Hydrate Me Wash, Hydrate Me Rinse, Anti Gravity, Session hair spray, and Fresh Hair dry shampoo spray in a nifty black mesh bag to keep them all organized.

I really want to keep the Jet.Pack for myself, but I figured I can get all the products easily, whereas my readers may not even know the glory of Kevin Murphy, so it benefits you more!

Here’s how you enter

It’s really simple, even your 97-year-old grandmother or 5-year-old nephew could do it…I think.

Subscribe to my blog and leave me a comment telling me what you liked most about visiting the Kevin Murphy site. That’s it! Just go to the Kevin Murphy site, check it out, watch some podcasts, click on the links, and then come back here and tell me about your trip.

Want another shot at winning the Jet.Pack for yourself?? If you blog about my giveaway, please leave me a comment letting me know, and I’ll enter you into the drawing a second time 🙂

I will be announcing a winner on Friday October 15th, so you have a week to enter and then tell all your friends about the giveaway so they get a chance to enter as well.

Kevin Murphy is in no way sponsoring this giveaway, it is out of my intense adoration of the products that I am giving them away. If you want to learn more about Kevin Murphy, check out the KM site, Janelle’s blog, or like the KM pages on Facebook here and here.
