Nick’s on Main

Just thinking about our dinner is sending me right back into amazing food afterglow, so bear with me if drool ends up on your screen while you read this!

This past Christmas, our amazing and dear friend Dave (AKA Fraggle) gifted Billy and I with a certificate to Nick’s on Main, a lovely restaurant in Los Gatos. He had never been there himself, but was interested so he figured we would be too. Life can be busy, so we hadn’t gotten around to eating there until this past Wednesday. Billy and I decided to celebrate our anniversary a little late by heading to Nick’s for dinner, on Fraggle! Both of us were off work, so we called ahead and made a reservation and hoped for the best. It was better than expected, better even then we could have hoped for!

Nick’s on Main is a tiny restaurant, with the namesake Nick in residence daily cooking up some amazing dishes, greeting clients, even taking phone reservations believe it or not. The menu changes seasonally, with specials varying by what’s fresh. Billy and I both agreed ahead of time that we would be adventurous and try new foods and be open to unexpected things. I think we were in luck! I started my meal off with the orchard salad which had dried apricots, silvered almonds, goat cheese and a peppery vinaigrette, while Billy opted for the wild mushroom soup. That wild mushroom soup was phenomenal!! I cannot believe the complexities in taste that a bowl of creamy soup could offer. It was perfectly seasoned, and light while being rich and creamy. It was hands down our favorite part of the entire meal, but everything else was great too!

For our entrées, Billy ordered the bacon and blue cheese prime rib eye with pommes frites and sautéed Brussels sprouts, which I ended up eating, as Billy thought they were “just garnish” haha

I had the pan roasted pheasant breast in a port wine and cherry reduction sauce with creamy polenta and French beans sautéed with bacon (I skipped the bacon, but it made a difference, taste wise!) Pheasant does taste like chicken, but with more flavor and texture. It was so delicious, I would have it again!

This is where I share an amazing bit of food fact with you about Billy, he is a cheeseburger man. He would take a cheeseburger over any other food, any day of the week, and every steak he has ever eaten he says he would have preferred a cheeseburger instead. This night however, he enjoyed his steak, and did NOT want a cheeseburger instead! This says something for Nick’s prime rib eye steak!

We hadn’t anticipated the dessert options, and ate till we were stuffed during dinner, but once we heard the selection, we knew we would have to make room, because there was no leaving without trying something! I had the warm banana bread pudding in a rum sauce, which is a restaurant favorite. It was heavenly, so glad I ordered it! Though Billy is no fan of bananas, he does like banana bread, and enjoyed this dish to help him cut through the richness of his.

Billy went with the chocolate peanut butter mousse, because aside from cheeseburgers, chocolate and peanut butter combined is his favorite thing to eat. It was so rich and decadent, I could only manage a few tiny bites, and he wasn’t able to finish, even with the help of my banana bread pudding to help him through.

I have always wondered how people remember truly remarkable food, and can come up with an answer to “what’s your favorite thing you have ever eaten?” I now have my own answer to this question, and it would undoubtedly be the meal we had at Nick’s on Main!

I brought my awesome Olympus Pen along, but like the silly girl I am, I left the memory card in my computer from dumping photos from the music video shoot, so I couldn’t use it. Instead, we used Billy’s HTC Evo Android phone, which has an 8mp camera to take the photos in this post. I think it did a pretty good job!

I wore a LBD from Target that I picked up awhile ago, but haven’t gotten to wear yet because the zipper is finicky and doesn’t like to go up all the way. I was determined to wear it, so I zipped it up before I put it on, and the wriggled it on over my head, which was hilarious I am sure! I love the pockets on the dress! I have also been playing with my clip in extensions this week, and putting them into my favorite summer hairstyle, the side pony!

Sweet Peas and sweet people

Friendship is a wonderful thing. Having friends is a blessing, and being able to spend time with them is one of my favorite pastimes. This morning, Billy and I got to hang out with one of my best, and most elusive, friends, Lexie. Lexie is a world traveler, and has spent much of the last 3 or so years abroad, and I have missed her each time she’s gone. She most recently returned from a trip to Southeast Asia, visiting Cambodia for volunteer work at Water Of Life , and then visiting Thailand and Vietnam for pleasure.

Billy and I picked up miss Lexie and told her we had a surprise, and we hope she hadn’t eaten yet, then drove to downtown Los Gatos to one of our favorite restaurants, Sweet Peas for crepes! I ordered the chicken pesto crepe, Billy had the Benedictine, and Lexie got the turkey and sun-dried tomato, and we were all more than thrilled with our choices, but I think my pesto crepe was by far the most delicious. We all shared a nutella and strawberry crepe, which is my absolute favorite crepe ever.

After we ate, we took a walk downtown, window shopping and people watching. We stopped in to Mike’s Bikes, and at two optometry stores for Billy to try on glasses that might fit his wide head, and generally just enjoyed our time together, catching up and laughing.

Lexie is one of my friends whom I rarely see, but each time I do it’s as if we are picking up where we left off, and just filling each other in on what we have missed. She is a joy to be with, someone I love and care about, and I appreciate her friendship. I hope you all have friends like that!

Kobe graduated!

Friday, Kobe graduated from the 5th grade at Mulberry School in Los Gatos. He was so excited all week about graduation. I have never seen a kid this into graduation. He picked out a nice sport coat, tie, button down and khaki pants outfit, and couldn’t wait to wear it. He was also really concerned that some of his classmates wouldn’t be dressed up and would ruin the effect of his nice outfit, precious right?!

Each of the kids gave a speech about their time at Mulberry and how it has shaped them and made them ready to go to middle school. One of the girls, Kira, gave a speech reminiscent of a college graduate’s, and you can see she is going places with her life. Apparently, she is the equivalent of the class valedictorian, having breezed through the academics, and also excelled in class leadership. I sure hope Kobe keeps in touch with his classmates so we can see what becomes of them later on. Kobe’s speech was on how Mulberry has made him “strive to not go with the crowd”. He is adorable, and I am so blessed to be his (and Bryn’s) nanny. Check out these pictures of Kobe, his sister Bryn, mom Kia and dad Vince. Aren’t they a beautiful family?!

Kobe Sullivan, President of the United States of America, 2036…you watch for it!

Super gorgeous girls, I just love them both! They could be models (I  think Kia was).

Vanessa is wedding ready!

Vanessa is a beautiful and intelligent woman whom I met when Lux gave me the privilege of styling her bridal party’s hair on her wedding day. Vanessa and I clicked at her trial a few months back and I was very excited for Memorial day weekend to roll around so I could finally get my hands on her lovely locks and the hair of her bridal party. Vanessa and I decided to use clip in hair extensions to give her voluminous hair and make her feel like a hair model as well as a princess on her wedding day. I love using clip in extensions on my brides who want to wear their hair half up or all down. It really gives their hair that Hollywood glamor that so many women want when they bring in the photos of movie stars with thick luscious hair down to there. So without further ado, here are my point-and-shoot pictures from the wedding day. *I say this because I am DYING for a new camera that gives me amazing quality photos, and I finally found one that is WAY outside my price range so I have to save up and wait a bit to get it*

This is Vanessa, is she not absolutely adorable?! What a great glowing bride. She was a joy 🙂

Bridesmaid Elyse

Sister-in-law and bridesmaid Shannon

and youngest sister Raquel

There were more bridesmaids, but I didn’t have the pleasure of styling their hair, so I didn’t get their photos 🙂

Timing for wedding services

I have developed speed and efficiency when styling hair for weddings, and take pride in quality as well as quickness. I require 45 minutes per person as a general rule. I have been known to bust out a beautiful up style in 30 minutes, but I like having a comfort of the full 45 minutes in case there are some tricky pieces, or the hair just won’t cooperate. I allow time for touch ups at the end of the service to make sure your wedding party is in picture perfect form before the wedding.

A little bit about who I am and what I’m about

I am a hairstylist born and raised in the San Francisco bay area. My northern California upbringing has gifted me with an aesthetic that is casual, classic, and understatedly elegant. I am equally at home styling hair for weddings and photo shoots as I am in the salon working out your monthly cut and color.

I find joy in the simple things in life; my fabulous husband, my two fascinating black kitties, and my amazing friends and family who have remained by my side through the best and the worst of times. I am a dreamer with my feet firmly on the ground, loving all things fiction and fantastical, and am unhealthily addicted to books and the library.

I would love to be a part of your life through your hair, whether you would like to see me regularly for your color or you would like to look as beautiful a bride as your love has made you feel on your wedding day. I especially adore styling hair for weddings and special occasions. There is something about playing dress up and having the perfect hairstyle for the occasion that has always drawn me to these events, and I would love to be a part of yours!
