Santa baby…

I hate surprises. I don’t like keeping secrets that later become surprises, and I especially hate, no, let me capitalize it so you get the full effect, HATE when people say “I’ve got a surprise for you!” and then won’t tell you what it is. You are better off just surprising someone without ever having mentioned the surprise in the first place. Sort of sets them up to be angry. Or maybe that’s just me.

Christmas shopping is no exception. I tend to create “the list” from which I ask for gifts. You stray from that list and I won’t be the happiest camper, just ask Billy how my mom fared a few years back when she just had to surprise me. Let’s just say is wasn’t pretty. In the last few years I have even gone so far as to buy all the gifts I had on the list, wrap them up, stick them under the tree and then tell Billy or my family member what they got for me. Sometimes I even give them the receipt so I can be reimbursed. What, did I go too far?

There are many ways to create a Christmas list. My personal favorite is the written list, usually on a scrap of paper, that gets tossed around and lost several times before completed.

Billy loves the techie list that gets put in his phone and referenced throughout the buying experience.

My sister-in-law enjoys the Amazon.com wish list, and creates and sends one out every year.

This year, I want to get a little savvy on you and put out a “blog gift list”….hopefully my family members will at some point see this and use it to purchase awesome Christmas gifts for me. If they already picked up a gift for Christmas, then they can just use the list for my birthday, which is 3 days after Christmas! So without further ado, here are the gifts you can get me for either Christmas or my birthday!

A diamond cut paper shredder. I am so stinking tired of hand ripping up my monthly bank statements and bills. It would be awesome to have a machine that did it for me. This is just an option, I would take any diamond cut shredding machine.

A beautiful and functional road bike to use for training and competing in triathlons next year. I honestly don’t have the first clue about bikes and couldn’t tell you what I am looking for, but this Mercier Elle matches all the new cycling gear I just loaded up on at Pearl Izumi on black Friday. What can I say, I’m a girl when it comes to matching.

Kitchenaid mixer attachments. I LOVE my Kitchenaid mixer. It completes me in the kitchen. It makes everything so much easier. I particularly want the shredder and slicer attachments, but I will take any attachments that might make life easier.

Under Armour running gear. I love their compression, cold, and hot weather gear. I made an Amazon.come wishlist full of UA stuff. It’s a little pricey, so the only piece I own is a pink running visor. Won’t you make my Under Armour collection complete?

An unlimited shopping spree to Ann Taylor Loft. Every time they get a new collection. And every season. Can we handle that request?

The complete Audrey Hepburn DVD collection, preferably on Blu Ray. My favorite movie of all time is Breakfast at Tiffanys. I put it on when I am home alone, when it rains, or when I just need to hear something magical while I putz around the house. Her whole collection of movies would be ideal, but I’m not picky and will take any you offer! Also, where on earth can I find that sleep mask?!

A personal trainer for the next year to get me through my triathlon training, my first (then second, and possibly even third) triathlon, get me down to a very healthy weight while still being strong and fit, and give me the motivation to keep going after my goals when it seems futile and just. so. hard. How about a nicer Jillian Michaels or Bob Harper from the Biggest Loser?

A fully stocked makeup kit full of MAC and Make Up For Ever products. Love that stuff.

Annnnd I’m out of ideas. I am very sure given a longer amount of time I could come up with a much lengthier list, but I will save you that pain 😉 Happy shopping!!

the vacation plans

I feel like a kid out of school for summer vacation! I know some schools started today, but for me, it was the start to 5 days off, so it’s summer break!

I started my vacay off productively, with a 6:45am run with my good friend Sharon (you know, the rockstar that does triathlons and marathons whom I sometimes run with?) and then promptly went back to sleep for a few more hours. Once I deemed it late enough to wake up for a vacation schedule, I put on my adorable turquoise bandeau top bikini with the ruffle skirted bottom and headed to the pool with Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen. This book so far is amazing. I have really enjoyed reading it, and am taking my time because I am enjoying it so much, which is unusual for me. It was actually warm enough for me to venture into the pool for a bit, and I clung to the side and read while I submerged the rest of myself under the perfectly cool water. I love that the pool is pretty much always deserted when I happen to be there, it’s like a private pool! Oh, I decided I need some sort of big floppy sun hat to wear, so my face can stay shaded while I am out in the sun. I will have to look for one this week!

After I was nice and toasty, I headed back to the apartment and spent the afternoon trolling Facebook, catching up on my favorite blogs, and being deliciously lazy. I did hit my wall of lazy though, as there is only so much I can handle before I go crazy, and decided I would head to the mall for some retail therapy. I took my time, heading to my favorite stores (NY&Co, Charlotte Russe, Forever 21, and Ann Taylor Loft) and happened to pick up a fun dress! I had several to try on, hoping to find one for my friend Michelle’s annual birthday dinner in September, and though I like the one I chose, I don’t know if it will be my pick for the dinner.

Billy had some priceless responses to the dress when he got home and I tried it on for him. First, he said  I looked “like the bee girl from that Blind Melon video!” and then “oh, if you pull it down a little, you would look like a slutty Hamburgler!” Neither of those were what I was hoping for, but once I accessorized it and had on fun heels, he liked it better 🙂 Silly husbands! What do you think of the dress? I was attracted to it because it has a tutu like skirt, and a comfy stretchy striped top. Mind you, I am much curvier than the Forever 21 model in the photo, but you get the idea. I ended my mall trip with awesome raspberry and dark chocolate gelato, which was to die for! I love ice cream, but there is just something about gelato that just does it for me. I think I would gain 10 pounds if I ever made it to Italy, because I would eat my weight in gelato while I was there!

Billy and I took in a later dinner at the Elephant Bar in Campbell. They have a late night happy hour from 9pm to close that is a super good deal. I had lettuce wraps, Billy had a burger and fries, we split macaroni and cheese, and a brownie, and had a drink a piece, and our bill was $24 and change. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me! The portions are smaller, so it was nice to not have giant plates of food that I would probably have eaten too much of, and the prices are a steal. Our waitress seemed to be having a bad night, so we tipped her well. I hope she wasn’t angry about having to work the bar closing shift and serve the people who kept coming in even though it was late. I am not that compassionate for the service industry. I work in it, so I know what it takes to gives good service with a smile, and how lame it is to be mean, rude or dismissive of your patrons, but Billy was nice and was stoked to be on his “Friday” and have two days off ahead of him, so he was good to her. I wish I were a nicer person sometimes, but it takes too much effort!

Tomorrow, I will be teaming up once again with the wonderful people of Element 151 productions, and doing hair and makeup for a music video for a local band called Northern Son. My friend OJ is their guitarist, and I went to school with a few of the band members (though I wasn’t friendly with them), so I am excited to be a part of this project. The treatment for the video sounds really neat, and I can’t wait to have a video to post up for everyone to see, but I can’t get ahead of myself now 🙂

Wednesday and Friday my plans are much the same as today, sloth it up, hit the pool, run, but nothing definite. Thursday I am heading to San Francisco to do some sight-seeing and really check out the city with my lovely friend Lexie, and  I can’t wait to take lots of pictures to show you! We want to walk the Golden Gate bridge, check out Golden Gate Park, eat at lots of great SF gems, and see more of the city than I am used to. My regular repertoire for visiting SF is hit the marina and Embarcadero for Fisherman’s wharf, Pier 39, Ghiradelli Square, or Union Square for touristy things, or head straight to whatever venue the concert I am attending is at, and leaving immediately after. Do you have any SF must lists for me to check out? We plan on spending the entire day there, so I want to fit in as much as possible.

More updates and details of my excursions to come!

finding my personal style

Today, because it was raining and yucky out, I threw on a hoodie, jeans and my worn in Vans canvas sneakers and went on my way. I realized later that this exact combo was my go to in high school. It has been 7 years since I graduated from high school. Since, I have gone through college, made it through my grueling assistant program and am a hair stylist renting a station at a beautiful salon, but I haven’t changed too much fashion wise.

For years I have watched Stacy and Clinton throw out wardrobes similar to my own and revamp people on What Not to Wear. I have read countless fashion magazines, followed every Hollywood starlet’s fashion sense in gossip magazines and envied all of the beautiful and trendy clothes in the malls. So why haven’t I completely left behind the high school casual attire of my youth? I think because it’s comfortable, familiar and easy, I have had a hard time letting every hoodie, sneaker, jeans and t-shirt combination go. Granted, this is not a bad thing for certain scenarios, but not every day life. I do dress up a bit when I head off to work, but that is usually pairing my ever-present jeans with a nicer top or sweater, and sometimes it means I go to an extreme and mix in office wear like slacks and button downs. I don’t seem to have my own personal style; it’s either super casual, or inexpertly mixed with business casual.

Every time I try to revamp my wardrobe, I am limited by my budget; I can only afford to add a few things at a time, which doesn’t a whole wardrobe make! I am trying to get myself out of that comfort zone where jeans and a t-shirt or hoodie are my go to items, so help me with this folks!

This is a challenge for anyone who reads this. I want affordable trends, outfits, and places to shop sent to me. Be my personal shoppers, help me out of this rut! I promise to have an open mind, to at least try on the suggestions, perhaps even document the experience with photos and a blog to share it with you, but don’t send me stuff that is just crazy, I am not a circus freak to laugh at, people! You can either leave me comments on this here blog (I LOVE getting your comments!) or e-mail me hairbyadrian@gmail.com

Let’s see where this goes!
